Nottingham Railway Station the principal transport hub within the city and one of the busiest stations in the East Midlands, accommodates in excess of 8 million passenger entries and exits annually. As a key gateway to the city, the main entrance is subject to constant, high-volume footfall throughout the year, placing significant demands on flooring infrastructure. To meet these demands, there was a clear requirement for a new heavy duty entrance matting system capable of withstanding sustained traffic while effectively controlling the ingress of dirt and moisture. The project focused on enhancing both operational performance and the overall presentation of the station’s main entrance, ensuring it delivers a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the millions of passengers passing through each year.

Why is Entrance Matting Important for

Transport

Entrance matting plays a crucial role in trapping dirt, moisture and debris carried in by high volumes of passengers, preventing them from being tracked throughout the station. This helps reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents, improves cleanliness across concourse areas, and protects internal flooring from heavy wear caused by constant pedestrian and wheeled traffic.

The station’s main entrance faced increasing pressure from sustained high passenger volumes, with the existing flooring solution unable to effectively manage the ingress of dirt and moisture. This resulted in higher maintenance demands, reduced cleanliness, and a decline in overall visual standards within a key gateway area. Additionally, the system lacked the durability required for such a demanding environment, raising concerns around long-term performance and slip resistance, particularly during adverse weather conditions. A further requirement was that any replacement solution needed to be installed with minimal disruption and be fully operational immediately, ensuring continuity within this busy transport setting.
